Each summer, the Hillsboro Health Foundation prepares thousands of meal packages for children of the Hillsboro School District No. 3. Since access to nutritional meals is vital for physical and cognitive development, the Hillsboro Health Foundation has made it a priority to ensure children have consistent meals when school is not in session.
The Hillsboro Health Foundation became passionate about children's nutrition in 2013 when it was learned that, according to the the Illinois State Board of Education Free and Reduced Meal Eligibility Data, 69% of schoolchildren in the Hillsboro School District No. 3 qualify for free meals due to low socio-economic status. As good nutrition is vital for good health, there was a concern about how these children will have access to steady meals in the summer months when school was out of session.
To support these children and their caregivers, the Hillsboro Health Foundation developed the Summer Lunch Program. Since then, the Hillsboro Health Foundation serves approximately 5,500 meals between the months of June and July, ensuring no child goes hungry.
Towards the end of the school year, students of the Hillsboro School District No. 3 (18 years of age and under) will receive a letter indicating registration for the program has begun. The student's caregiver will complete the attached registration form, per student, and select a pickup location for the caregiver to pick up the meal packet for the week. Meals are distributed once a week, between designated times, and contain a week's worth of food for each registered student.
The pickup locations are:
Historically, meal pickups are scheduled on Mondays, between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Please review the registration form for current pickup information.
When available for the summer season, registration forms can be found below.
